A Pomsky in Paris: Good Idea or Bad Idea?

Le Royaume Des Galopins is a Pomsky kennel based in the Paris region. So we get more and more Parisian families contacting us to ask whether keeping a Pomsky in Paris is a good idea.
First of all, you should know that the Pomsky comes from a cross between a Husky and a Pomeranian. The Pomsky therefore belongs to what are known as the primitive breeds, with instincts that are stronger and more developed than in other breeds. That said, the aim of the cross is to reduce the Husky’s size but also to obtain a gentler, more adaptable character.
A Pomsky in Paris? Yes — but a small one.
There is a wide variety of Pomskies, both in coat and in size. But if you want your Pomsky to live in Paris, in an apartment, we recommend choosing one of small build.
You can find Pomskies from 45 cm down to 25 cm, so from 18 kg to 3 kg. That range exists because the Husky and the Pomeranian are two dogs of very different size. What is more, within each of those breeds there is variation in weight and height too. There are mini Huskies of 8 kg and standard Huskies of 15 kg, just as there are Pomeranians of 2 kg and others of 5 kg.
Pomsky breeders are free to make their own selection according to the build they want to work towards.
We can now say with confidence that the generation has no bearing on a Pomsky’s build. F1s are not necessarily the largest, and F4 Pomskies are not necessarily the smallest. It all depends on the lines and on the selection work.
Most breed clubs and breeders talk about three broad Pomsky categories:
- Micro Pomsky, 4 to 6 kg and under 36 cm at the withers
- Small Pomsky, 6 to 9 kg and under 40 cm at the withers
- Standard Pomsky, 9 kg and over and above 41 cm at the withers
If you want a Pomsky in Paris and in a small apartment, we recommend going for a Micro to Small Pomsky.
An adaptable big-teddy-bear temperament
Again, it is hard to generalise about the Pomsky’s character, because the parents’ temperament and the socialisation done by the breeder strongly influence what your future puppy will be like.
Just as there are fearful, escape-prone, primitive Huskies, there are others that live very happily in an apartment and are deeply affectionate and glued to their humans. So it is important to choose a breeder who has selected Huskies and Pomskies with soft temperaments.
Broadly, the Pomsky is a happy, gentle, affectionate, active dog — and a little stubborn and mischievous. In my view, the Pomsky can live perfectly well in an apartment as long as it gets regular outings and mental stimulation.
The most important thing for a Pomsky is not so much long walks and physical activity as the presence of its human. A Pomsky left alone most of the time could develop behavioural problems: house-training issues, destruction.
In conclusion
It is entirely possible to have a Pomsky in Paris, provided you choose a small Pomsky with a gentle, cheerful character and give it enough physical and mental activity to thrive. The Pomsky remains a dog that needs interaction and company.
