Pomsky Feeding: The Complete Guide

Feeding your Pomsky well lays the foundation for their health over the next 15 years. Between low-quality kibble, BARF diets, and conflicting advice online, it’s not always easy to know where to start. The Pomsky has a particular digestive sensitivity (inherited from the Husky and Pomeranian), and a poor food choice shows up quickly (loose stools, dull coat, low energy).
1. The Pomsky’s specific nutritional needs
A small-to-medium (4-13 kg), active dog: animal protein at a minimum of 25-30% (chicken, salmon, lamb, duck), fats and omega-3/6 at 12-18% for the coat, limited carbohydrates. Key vitamins and minerals: biotin B8, zinc, omega-3 EPA/DHA, balanced calcium/phosphorus, vitamin E.
2. Which diet to choose?
Premium kibble: meat or fish listed as the first ingredient, protein ≥ 25%, no artificial colors or chemical preservatives. We use and recommend the France Croquettes brand.
BARF: observed benefits (shiny coat, firm stools) but requires balanced rations established with a veterinarian or nutritionist.
Mixed feeding: 80% kibble and 20% wet food, to improve palatability.
3. Quantities and frequency by age
Puppy 2-12 months: 3-4 meals a day between 2 and 4 months, then 3 meals until 6 months, then 2 meals.
Adult 1-7 years: 2 meals a day. Toy (3-6 kg): about 80-130 g/day. Miniature (6-10 kg): 130-200 g/day. Standard (10-13 kg): 200-260 g/day.
Senior 7-8 years and up: senior kibble, lower in calories, enriched with glucosamine and chondroitin.
4. Strictly forbidden foods
Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion and garlic, xylitol, alcohol, avocado, macadamia nuts, cooked bones, coffee and tea, dairy products in large quantities. In case of ingestion: contact a veterinarian or a veterinary poison control center immediately.
5. Food transition
Over 10 to 14 days: 75/25, then 50/50, then 25/75, then 100% new food. When the puppy arrives, keep the same food for at least 3 to 4 weeks.
6. Recommended supplements
Salmon or flaxseed oil (omega-3), probiotics for a sensitive stomach or after antibiotic treatment, joint supplements with glucosamine and chondroitin from 6-7 years of age for Standard-sized dogs.
