Pomsky Grooming and Care: Complete Practical Guide

The Pomsky’s coat is one of its most appealing features: dense, silky, with highlights reminiscent of the husky. But this magnificent coat doesn’t take care of itself. A poorly brushed Pomsky develops mats (clumps of dead hair stuck to the skin) that prevent the skin from breathing, cause irritation, and make grooming painful. The good news: with the right tools and a regular routine, caring for a Pomsky is manageable for anyone.

1. The 3 Pomsky coat types: polar, fluffy, wooly

Polar (short coat): close to the husky, dense, thick undercoat, easy to maintain but heavy shedding. Brush once a week outside of shedding season, daily during shedding.

Fluffy (medium-length coat): the most common at the kennel, a “plush toy” look, tangles behind the ears, armpits, and thighs. Brush 1 to 2 times a week outside of shedding season, daily during shedding.

Wooly (long coat): the silkiest and most demanding, mats quickly without daily brushing.

2. The risks of poor grooming

Mats are a health issue, not just a cosmetic one: they prevent thermal regulation (overheating in summer, persistent dampness in winter) and pose a risk of dermatitis or skin fungal infections over time.

3. The right brushing tools — and the ones to avoid completely

What you need: a slicker brush (flexible pins), a long-toothed comb, a detangling spray.

Avoid the furminator: it cuts the undercoat instead of removing it and damages the coat over the long term, so we don’t use it and don’t recommend it.

Should you shave a Pomsky? No, except under specific medical prescription (surgery, dermatology).

4. Step-by-step brushing technique

Spray detangler on at-risk areas, work section by section from root to tip, use the slicker brush on small tangles while holding the base of the hair, finish with the long-toothed comb. Allow 10 to 20 minutes for a fluffy coat, up to 30-40 minutes during shedding season.

5. Bathing: when, how, and with what

No frequent baths (sebum protects the skin): every 2 to 3 months under normal conditions. Four-step protocol: brush before the bath, use a pH-appropriate dog-specific shampoo, rinse thoroughly, dry completely with a warm hair dryer while brushing.

6. Other care not to overlook

Eyes: epiphora (tearing) is common, inherited from the Pomeranian. Clean with saline solution.

Nails: trim every 4 to 6 weeks.

Teeth: raw chew bones and weekly brushing.

Ears: monthly check, occasional ear cleaning solution.
